Read the following story and answer the questions below.
Mr. Umezawa had a date with a beautiful girl one February afternoon. It was very cold, so he wore his heavy woolen overcoat with big wooden buttons. They agreed to meet on the platform of Harajuku station.
Before his date, Mr. Umezawa had some business near Yoyogi, so when he got to Yoyogi station, he was 15 minutes late. He ran up the stairs, saw the train doors closing, so he ran as fast as he could and jumped onto the train. Unfortunately, the train doors closed before Mr. Umezawa was completely inside the train, so his coat buttons got caught in the doors. Mr. Umezawa was facing the doors, unable to move because his coat buttons were firmly between the two doors. He pulled and pulled with all his might, but he could not loosen himself from the doors.
Soon the train was at Harajuku station, so Mr. Umezawa thought that the doors would open and he could meet his date. Unfortunately the doors of the train opened on the opposite side, so Mr. Umezawa could not get off the train. As the train pulled out of Harajuku station, Mr. Umezawa could see his date waiting impatiently on the platform of the station.
Mr. Umezawa thought that surely at the next station, Shibuya, the
doors would open on his side. They didn’t, so Mr. Umezawa decided to
wait for the next station, Ebisu, but unfortunately the doors again did not open on his side at Ebisu station. Poor Mr. Umezawa. The same thing happened at Meguro, Gotanda and Osaki. At Osaki station, the train stopped for a few minutes because it was ahead of schedule.
The train got to Shinagawa station, but again the doors on Mr.

Subject: Class Reunion
Dear Mrs. Baker,
I’m not sure if you remember me, but I was one of your students at North Carolina Elementary School 15 years ago. I found your e-mail address on the school website. It was wonderful to see that you are still teaching at the school.
I wasn’t a very good student in elementary school, but I always enjoyed
your math lessons. In high school, I became even more interested in the subject and decided to study it at college in order to become a math teacher. After graduating from college, I went to Australia and worked
on a farm for a year. Now, I’m back to North Carolina working as an accountant.
Last weekend, I met Jennifer White and Tom Brown at a department store in town. I was very surprised to find they got married and opened
their coffee shop. We hadn’t seen each other for a long time. We
agreed to try to organize a reunion with some of our old classmates. So
far, we’ve been able to contact 10 of them. We’re hoping to meet at French Restaurant Plaisir on the evening of August 12. Would it be possible for you to join us? We would all love to see you again.

Hi, Steve,
Thank you for your e-mail. I clearly remember you! It’s been a long
time. How wonderful that you got such a great job! I’m very pleased to hear your good news. How’s everything? You seem really busy working. I hope your job will be successful.
Speaking of my life, two years ago my grandson, John, was born. As he is a toddler, I have to keep my eyes on him. He likes walking around and playing with toys.
As a matter of fact, I’m afraid I will not be able to come to French Restaurant Plaisir because my daughter and her husband are going to attend their best friend’s wedding party and I have to look after John at home.
So instead of meeting at the French Restaurant, would you come over to my house so that we can hold a potluck party? Please tell my idea to the other classmates. Would you give me your reply by July 12?
Thank you very much again for your warm message. Take care,

Dear Mrs. Baker,
Thank you for your reply. I told your plan to the other members last

Best regards, Steve Ross
